MAJOR MINERALS:
CALCIUM
bone strength
slows rate of bone loss
reduces osteoporosis
helps our blood to clott
examples; milk, diary, fish, dark leafy greens
SODIUM
helps muscles relax
regulates body fluids = electrolyte
regulates blood pressure
example; table salt, processed foods
need in greater amounts, they are essential
they are electrolytes meaning they regulate body fluids (sodium chloride potassium)
POTASSIUM
electrolyte that can counter balance a diet of sodium
impacts body's muscles, mental alterness, storage of energy
found in animal tissue and plants
doesn't exist in processed foods
E.G. avocado, spinach, carrot, bananas
TRACE MINERALS
IRON: serves as haemoglobin, supports immune sys., helps brain development
body only requires smaller amounts (less than 20mg a day)
all absorbed through and in the small intestine
Heme = complete, meat, fish/animal sources
Nonheme = incomplete, dried peas, green veges, cereals
