The Biophysical Earth
Atmoshpere
The Troposphere
-
Contains all the weather systems that produce precipitation, surface winds. This is where you live and where weather occurs
Tropopause- located at the top of the troposphere. This layer separates the troposphere from the stratosphere
The Stratosphere
-
The temperatures are relatively constant in the lower stratosphere; they do not change with altitude
-
-
The Mesosphere
Temperatures fall rapidly with elevation because there is no water vapour, cloud or dust to absorb incoming radiation.
-
-
The Thermosphere
80km and up, the air is very thin
Temperatures rise rapidly, due to concentrations of atomic oxygen in the atmosphere which absorbs incoming IV radiation
-
-
Exosphere-the upper part of the thermosphere, air is very thin
-
Insolation
Incoming solar radiation ----> Insolation ------>short wave energy we receive from the sun ------>It is this energy that controls our weather and climate
The amount we receive depends on: 1. the earths distance from the sun 2. The altitude of the sun 3. The length of day and night
