Napoleon Bonaparte became emperor of France in 1804
He decided to conquer Spain as well

What was the Spanish War of Independence?
It start on 2 May 1808 and ended in 1814
1812 approved a new constitution
Ordinary people can vote but only men
Was separated into legislative, executive and judicial power
The power of the monarchy was reduced
Freedom of the press was established
The Spanish Inquisition was abolished
The First Carlist War began in 1833 and ended in 1839
What happened to the Spanish Empire?

In 1898 Spain was fought a war the United States
Spain lost the last colony, Cuba

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain
The steam engine are made in factories
Industry became more important that agriculture
These change happened more slowly in Spain
Mining was important in Asturias and in Rio Tinto
The steel industry developed in Pais Vasco
There were textile factories in Cataluna
Transport was also transformed by the steam engine
