Soteriology [bailey stogsdill]
The Gospel
Why is it important?
Teaching the wrong gospel can result in terrible consequences
An incorrect Gospel will give people a false hope of salvation
A correct understanding of the gospel is a crucial foundation for our walk with God
Two Aspects
Gospel Message
Christ died for our sins
He was buried
He arose from the dead 3 days later
He appeared to over 500 eyewitnesses

The Salvation Diamond
Words to Discuss
Justification
Adoption
Redemption
Sanctification
Union with Christ
Facets
Justification
Romans 3:21-31
means to be declared righteous
Illustration: The Courtroom
Characters:
God is the judge
The prosecuting attorney is Gods law
The defendant is us
The defense attorney is Jesus
The Action:
The prosecuting attorney reads out the transgressions we have committed
Our defense attorney steps in but he doesn't attempt to defend us, instead he agrees that we are guilty
He offers to take punishment we deserve upon himself.
4.The right standing he has with court he asks to be given to us.
We leave the court room justified
We aren't made innocent
We are not made righteous
We are pronounce righteous
Justification is available to all who believe
Justification is a free gift from God
Justification by grace
Justified by faith and not by law
Results:
We are righteous
Adoption
The act of God where he places believers into his family
Benefits:
a) As believers we are considered his children and call him “Father” (“Abba”).
b) As his children we have unhindered access to God.
c) As his children,we are in a community with many other siblings.
d) As his children, God disciplines and train us; we are not abandoned.
e) When discipline is received, Gods children grow in holiness.
f) Gods children are to endure hardships as God’s training/discipline.
Redemption
To purchase winners out of the slave market of sin.
The classic OT illustration of redemption is Israel crossing the Red Sea after Moses leads them out of slavery in Egypt.
The scripture speaks of people being slaves of sin
Even as believers we can live in captivity to sin/ slaves to sin.
Sanctification
A process where we work with God to live according to the spirit and to have our behavior become more christ-like
means to be holy or set apart
Views:
Past- we are viewed as sancitifed
Present- we are viewed as sanctified
Future- we hope for a future to complete sanctification
Aspects:
Jesus is in the father & the father in Jesus
Christ in us & we in Christ
Aspect 2: Jesus life in the believer via the Holy Spirit
It is important to remember the image of the tree & roots: sin produces sins in both believers and unbelievers
Paul describes the struggle he experiences when he desires to do good but finds that sin is right there with him
Paul recognizes that he has both the old nature and the new nature
Paul also recognizes that he needs the Holy Spirit to produce the character of Jesus through him
To "walk according to the Holy Spirit" means for a Christian to daily live his/ her life in dependence upon the Holy Spirit to produce the character of Christ in him/her.
