African American Women: Life in Bondage
"The Women were the Pluckiest"
Women were seen as more valuable as men because not only did they work in the fields, but they did all the house chores as well.
Ex. A male slave could pick about 200 pounds of cotton while some women could pick up to 400-500 pounds.
After working in the fields, they were required to have a quota of spinning or weaving done before they went to bed.
There was also a high value on pregnant slaves, especially if they were good workers

By the late1700, African American woman had band together to improve themselves
Started schools, organized clubs which included social welfare programs
Often times, slaves educated themselves during the night or by listening on parents teaching their children.
Mid-19th cent. there were more than 4 million African Americas-- started to advocate for their rights

On larger plantations there were few opportunities to be a house servant. On the surface this job seemed to be of high statues, but slaves were treated worse than the ones working in the fields
The mistress of the house had high expectations for the slaves. Slaves who were working within the house were treated like dogs.
When white people entered the room, slaves had to remain standing the whole time.
On very wealthy plantations, slaves were expected to sleep at the end of the bed if their master needed anything during the night
As children, they were expected to sit under the dinner table and beg for scraps during meal time.

Slaves would dress up often times . They tended to dress up for church or even specific holidays.
Slave owners would try to keep families together so that they have the opportunity to have some family life

Slave women were less likely to die during childbirth
Children died at twice the rate because they did not have the proper care
More physically fit, did not wear corsets
