Threats to the Rainforest
Debt Repayments
in the 1980s, the government had to repay large loans taken out between 1965 and 1985
result = more deforestation
Population Pressure
70% of Brazil's 200 million people live in the Atlantic forest area
more rainforest clearance bc of this
caused by rapid population growth in cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo
minerals and gems underneath soil need to be dug out to export for money
farmers were put under pressure to produce more and earn more money to help repay debt
further in debt because of 2016 olympics
Logging
for expensive timber like Mahogany and basic wood to make pulp and paper
in order to provide for the growing population
wasting expensive non-renewable wood on basic items
Large Scale Farming (link to debt repayments)
initially to grow crops like coffee, tobacco and eucalyptus
the soils fertility drops bc of this, the farmland is converted into cattle ranches
small farms increasing
people without land move into that area from cities in Brazil and Argentina
expansion of heavy industry (link to debt repayments)
this is a result of Brazil's development
forest land has been cleared for industry, and the area has become Brazil's industrial area
