Pride and Prejudice
Jane Bennet
Jane isn't the smartest character in the story, but she does resemble Mrs. Bennet really well. She has the obligation of needing to marry a rich person. Austen uses Jane as a contrast of Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Bennet
Elizabeth is the smartest of all the women in the book and goes against all of the women's standards. She does not have the thought of marriage constantly on her mind.Austen uses Elizabeth to show that women actually have a say rather than what everyone else tells them.
Mary Bennet
Mary is a bookworm and no one seems to really pay attention to her.She has about the same intelligence as Elizabeth, but is really book smart unlike anyone else in the Bennet family. Austen uses her as an example of pride in the story as she is seen showing off her wisdom.
Mr. Bennet
Mr. Bennet is sarcastic and is very similar to Elizabeth. He is also very different than Mrs. Bennet because he doesn't have marriage as his number one priority for his daughters. He is used as a comedic effect to all the drama that is going on.
Mrs. Bennet
Mrs. Bennet is worrisome about her daughters getting a spouse. She always rubs her daughters off in people's faces. She wants them to marry someone rich and of high class rather than marry someone they truly care about. Austen uses her to show how the common woman was in the 19th century.
Mr. Darcy
Mr. Darcy shows off his wealth and can actually be kind unlike everyone else believes. He learns from the mistakes he makes in the beginning after he gets rejected by Elizabeth. Austen uses him to show that people can change their personalities for the better.
Mr. Collins
Mr. Collins is very persistent on getting a wife. He asked Elizabeth in which she rejected and he went on to get Charlotte. He always talks about his rank and can't take a rejection. Austen uses him as an example of prejudice because when Elizabeth rejects him he says it is very rude for a woman to disrespect someone of his class.
Lydia Bennet
Lydia has the resemblance of her mother by needing to marry the first rich person in sight. She is also the favorite of the Bennet children to her mother because she shows the daughter the world was expected to have during that time. Austen uses her to show that not all women really thought about all of the potential they had but rather cared about being rich.
Role of Women
Women did not have much of a choice during the 19th century of what they wanted to do.They did not get very much education so they were not able to understand everything going on. They were expected to marry someone rich and take care of them.
Social Expectaitions
Their social class usually was not that high but they were expected to listen to men and respect them at the same time.In a marriage they usually just took care of their husband and kids. They made sure their kids were able to get a spouse as well.
Marriage
If the woman wished to get married she was not allowed to propose but was expected to wait for the man to propose to her.
Irony
A huge irony that is shown in Pride and Prejudice is Elizabeth versus Mrs. Bennet. All Mrs. Bennet cared about was marrying a rich man but Elizabeth wanted to marry someone in which she truly loves.
