Literary Devices
Satire
Jane Austen frequently uses satire to point out the flaws of characters and the flaws of how the society views marriage. One example could be when Mr.Collins proposed to Elizabeth right after meeting her.
Irony
An ironic moment in this book was when Lydia and Mr.Wickham ran away and eventually got married after Darcy and Mr.Bennet agreed to send them money.
Role of Woman
Austen shows us that the woman of this time were expected to be married much younger today. And not being married was almost unacceptable. It seemed as woman were not really expected to go off to college our even necessarily to be educated. Woman were just expected to marry rich men and try to rely on their husband to be financially stable. .
Social Expectations
Throughout the book, we see the social different social classes and how they have an impact on marriages. If your a man with money, you are more likely to find a wife. It was mostly based on the amount of wealth you or your family had. The perfect example is when the Bingley sisters were unimpressed with Jane because her family did not have much money
Marriage
In marriages, the woman were not expected to make the first move. The woman definitely could not propose just like today. However, the marriages were not so based upon love, but based upon how much money your spouse had.
