Themes
role of women
In the novel Austen makes a point about how women in her time period were very much just seen as useless. The only purpose of women in that time period was to get married to a rich man. Austen obviously believed women had a greater purpose.
social expectations
Social classes play a very important role in the book. Many women tried to marry a man who was in a higher social class to help build a good reputation for herself and her family. Austen did not like the social class thing and made fun of it
Marriage
The whole novel revolved around marriage and the problems with it. People in that time period believed that love was no needed in order to marry someone as long as they had money. Austen thought one should marry someone who truly loves them and makes them happy.
Literary Devices
Satire
Austen's use of social expectation of marrying someone with money is shown through the female characters.
Irony
Elizabeth's and Darcy's relationship is ironic because Elizabeth didn't like Darcy at first because he was very prideful and judgmental but that's how Elizabeth is.
