Conflicts
Original opinions:
They each both originally have dislike each other because they see each others flaws.
Status:
Darcy is expected to marry someone with a high status, in other words not Elizabeth.
Relatives:
Elizabeth's mother makes her family appear without manners, making Elizabeth unsuitable for Darcy. Meanwhile Lady Catherine expects Darcy to marry her daughter.
Pride:
Both Elizabeth and Darcy have prideful attitudes which causes them originally feel superior towards each other.
Prejudice:
They both originally judge each other based upon appearance and status, before they actually meet each other.
Personality
Darcy
Perspective on marriage:
Darcy believes in marriage for love, which is shown through how he refuses to marry anyone that he does not have feelings for.
Kind:
"His understanding and opinions all please me; he wants nothing but a little more liveliness" (218) This is written by Mr. Gardiner and exemplifies Darcy's kind nature.
Elizabeth
Perspective on marriage:
Elizabeth believes in marriage for love which is show as she rejects Mr. Collin's and Darcy's proposal because she has no feelings towards them.
Witty:
"I am no longer surprised at your knowing
only
six accomplished women. I rather wonder now at you knowing
any
" (26). This quote is Elizabeth referring to Darcy's expectations of an accomplished woman.This response proves her witty nature because she does not follow all of the rules of society.
Turning Points
Receiving the letter:
When Elizabeth receives the letter from Darcy she learns of his genuine personality which causes her feelings towards him to grow.
Darcy giving money to Wickham
Darcy sends money to Wickham in order to save Lydia. This reveals his true personality and proves how caring he is.
Lady Catherine's visit
Lady Catherine comes in an attempt to prevent Elizabeth from marrying Darcy. However, it just causes Elizabeth's feelings to grow.
What messages do Jane Austen display through this marriage?
Status does not matter in marriage:
Darcy comes from the upper class with a high salary while Elizabeth comes from the middle class. However, they overcome these obstacles of status and the judgement that comes with it.
Love takes time:
All that Elizabeth and Darcy needed was a little time to get to know each other to fall in love. Time allowed for them to look past their original opinions and develop true feelings.
You don't need similar personalities to have a good marriage:
Both Darcy and Elizabeth have complete opposite personalities. Darcy has a kind personality while Elizabeth has a witty personality. However, both of them balance each other out, which creates a good marriage.
