Chapter 19 Properties and Change Of Matter
Section 1 Physical and chemical Properties
Physical properties
Physical Property~ A characteristics that you can observe without changing or trying to change the composition of the substance.
Many of these physical properties can be detected using your senses which include hear, taste, touch, and smell.
To describe a sample of matter, you need to identify its state first. The sample of matter can either be the state of a solid, the state of a liquid, or the state of a gas. The state of a sample of matter is an important physical property.
Some physical properties depend on the size of the object which are size dependent properties. For example a physical property that depends on size is mass.
Another physical property, density, does not depend on the size of object. Density measures the amount of mass in a given volume.
Melting and Boiling point
The temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid is called its melting points.
The temperature at which liquid changes into a gas is called its boiling point
Chemical properties
Chemical properties~ A characteristic that cannot be observed without alternating the substance.
Chemical Properties can be observed only by changing the composition
There are many ways to define chemical properties, which includes the ability to undergo a change that alters its density
chemical properties can't be observed by simplily viewing or touching of the material
Scientist use chemical properties to predict weather a sample will participate in a chemical reaction. Chemical properties may be used to classify compounds
property
Property~ A characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity the of is changed.
quality of an object made of matter, like its color, shape, size ,temperature and weight
A property describes how an object looks , acts and feels
