Weakness of the Articles of Confederation
Economic Disorganization
Congress could not regulate trade
The government was given little power to be able to manage trade/foreign trade
No uniform system of currency
Failed to set standard of currency causing trade to be less efficient
No power of taxation
Often times the money was not raised by the states or given to the national government causing substantial revenue shortfalls* biggest economic issue
Lack of Central Leadership
No independent judiciary
Since there was no system of courts in the jurisdiction of the government it made it easy for states to ignore national laws
No foreign affairs head
Without a single executive to act as the head of foreign affairs, America was at a serious diplomatic disadvantage
Inability to deal with internal and external threats
Since our government was so dependent on state troops, Congress was limited in its capabilities to respond to internal and external threats
Legislative Inefficiencies
Each state had one vote
Small states and large states had the same voting weight causing issues for people
Difficulty passing laws
A small percentage of the American populace could prevent bills from passing that could benefit the majority of Americans
Impractical amendment process
The Articles of Confederation was so poorly structured that it did not have mechanisms in place to fix itself
Shay's Rebellion
Debt - farmers losing land
Threatened the existence of the US
Meet in Philadelphia to fix the Articles
Rhode Island doesn't attend
