Jonestown Massacre
Jim Jones created the People's Temple organization/religious group in Indiana in the mid 1950s and convinced many members of his huge following to join him in his movement to Guyana. While there he convinced people to poison themselves in a mass suicide.

This is an example of obedience because Jim Jones was able to convince these people to do awful things. Such as murder the people who came to visit Jonestown and commit mass suicide. He was able to do this because the people of the People's Temple showed absolute obedience to him because they saw him as role model/authority figure.
The Manson "Family"

Charles Manson is an American cult leader whose followers carried out several notorious murders in the late 1960s
Charles Manson had power over these people because they viewed him as a savior and leader. Under his rule as a cult leader he had his followers carry out seven murders. His follows carried out his wishes because they did not believe they were doing anything wrong because Manson was always right and would never lead they astray.
The Milgram Experiment
One of the most famous studies of obedience in psychology was carried out by Stanley Milgram. Stanley Milgram, a psychologist at Yale University, conducted an experiment focusing on the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience.
The results of this experiment showed that people were very obedient to authority figures. Almost all of the subjects continued to electrocute the learner because they believed they would not be held responsible if the learner died. And because of this they were willing to hurt the learner because they authority figure said it was ok

This is an example of identity in that Park says that because of her nation she became an overachiever and by her junior year of high school she began to believe that she was smarter than other races because of her nationality

Joseph Suina
Suina was a military man of Native American decent. Once his comrades became aware of this he was no longer Suina, he was chief, or Tonto, or Geronimo, or Crazy Horse.
This is an example of identity because Suina remarks that he began to believe that he had the qualities stated in the Native American stereotypes. Suina said he would constantly take lead or point because he was a great Indian warrior, Suina also said he wasn't a huge drinker but by the end of tour could drink with the best of them.

The Bear That Wasn't
The Bear That Wasn't was a bear that woke up after hibernation and found that his woods had been replaced by a factory. This bear was accused of being a silly man in a fur coat that needs a shave but in all reality he was a bear
This is an example of identity because the bear began to believe he was not in fact a bear. Everyone repeatedly told him he was not a bear and because of this he believed it and worked in the factory instead of roaming the woods as a bear

It wasn't uncommon that teachers would make remark such as "You're Asian aren't you supposed to do well in math". This is an example of discrimination because she was expected to do better in school because of her nationality

These nicknames were made in affection toward Suina, but it was clear to Suina he was seen in light of all the stereotypes that many of his comrades had about Native American people. This is stereotyping because Indians are believed to be great warriors and that is what was expected of Suina in combat.

Everyone drives, it is a very important part of today's society. Although some races are expected to be bad drivers because of their nationality
In today's society it is a stereotype that Asian women are bad drivers. This is a stereotype because people believe Asian woman are not good drivers because of their nationality. People take small information about Asian drivers and apply it to all of them

Disability
Due to a worsening disability one may soon have to rely on a wheelchair, but your landlord wont install anything to help you with your disability.
This is an example of discrimination because everyone is entitled to equal living benefits. Landlords have a duty to change structures or practices in order to ensure that people with disabilities are able to enjoy equal benefit of equal access to housing

Wage Gap
The wage gap is a statistical indicator often used as an index of the status of women's earnings relative to men's. It is also used to compare the earnings of other races and ethnicities to those of white males, a group generally not subject to race- or sex-based discrimination.
This an example of discrimination because women and minorities made less money than white men doing the exact same job. Women used to earn 58 cent to every dollar men made and in 2013 the rate increased to 78 cents. although minorities have it even worse off, African-American women make 64 to every dollar a white man makes. These people are making less because of their gender and ethnicity

During the 1950s in America African American people did not get to experience some of the same rights as white people. Until 1954 African American people were not allowed to got to school with white people
This is an example of discrimination because people were denied access to public school because of their race. These people wanted to attain an education but, because of laws were not allowed to. and years later segregation was completely abolished during the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Japanese Americans
Following the events of Pearl Harbor in February 1942 an Executive Order signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that authorized the internment of Japanese-Americans
This is an example of hate and racisms because many Japanese Americans were imprisoned in camps to make sure no further terrorist actions towards America could ensue. These people were imprisoned against their will for doing nothing. Some of those imprisoned died in the camps due to a lack of proper medical care. Others were killed for not obeying orders.

This is the term that is used to describe the current hostility toward Islam and Muslims in the United States, manifested in prejudice, harassment and discrimination.
Since the events of the 9/11attacks the Muslim people experience many racist actions. Over the past decade 700,00 Muslim people have been subject to interviews from the FBI. As well as wiretapping, phone surveillance, and racial profiling.

Klu Klux Klan
The KKK is a white supremacist organization founded in 1866 that fought hard to oppose the granting of civil rights to African Americans. They did this using fear.
The KKK uses fear in society because they conducted acts of terrorism against African Americans. As well as murder, lynching, arson, rape, and bombing. These acts stopped African Americans from enjoying the full rights they were granted and oppressed them

When the Nazi regime carved its way into Europe they did so using fear and terror to silence people. The Nazi government created the Stutzstaffel and Gestapo forces to stop all people who spoke out against the state. These organizations captured and tortured hundreds of thousands of people
This is an example of fear in society because people were to afraid to speak out against the government. People knew that it was not just them that would be subject to arrest and violence but also their family members. This prevented many from speaking out, since they didn't want harm to come to their loved ones

The red scare was the promotion of fear of a potential rise of communisms in the US in the late 1950s when tensions with Russia were at an all time high
This is an example of fear in our society because many US citizens were convinced that the "Reds" were taking over the country. Because of this thousands of alleged communists were hounded by law enforcement, alienated from friends and family, and fired from their jobs.
