California - Energy Security
Facts
Largest state in the USA
Lowest per capital energy consumption rate in the USA due to mild weather
16% of the USA oil reserves are used here, but only 3 & of gas reserves
Produces 5% of the USA total electricty
Ha more motor vehicles than any other state
Why is it experiencing an energy crisis
Reliance on imports
Between 1960 and 2003 USA relied on imported gas and oil which increased from 18% to 58%
Consumption
2007 - USA consumed 23% of the worlds oil
Price
2006 - price of oil rose from $20 to $60 and in 2008 - $140
Reserves
Fossil fuels are running out, they will only last for another 40-65 years because of our overconsumption
Distribution
Global sources are unevenly distributed and many are concentrated in politically unstable areas such as the middle-east
Demand
Demand is increasing due to the growth of economies such as China and India, has resulted in more competiton
Why is is suffering
US energy market is privatized, so there is a desire for profit
Black- Outs June 2000 to May 2001
Weather - 2000 3rd year of drought so surplus energy due to lack of hydro-electricity, Summer was hot so increase demand for air-conditioning , Winter was cold, so increase demand for heating
Insufficient generating capacity- strong anti-pollution laws in 1970s meant energy companies were unwilling to build new power stations as they were too expensive
Limited capacity of power lines
