28.1 Fishes
Fins
A fin is a paddle-shaped structure on a fish or other aquatic animal that is used for balance, steering, and propulsion.
-
Paired fins reduce the chance of rolling to the side and allow for precise steering during swimming.
Both jaws and paired fins contributed to the evolution of a predatory way of life for some fishes and also enabled them to live in new habitats and produce more offspring.
-
Gills
-
-
Fishes open their mouth to let water enter the body & wash over gills until the water leaves the body through the operculum which is a moving flap .
-
-
Feeding & Digestion
Don't break down food, they swallow food as a whole and break it down in the stomach
Swim bladder acts as an air balloon that determines the depth of fish based on how much air fills it up
