Gutek Chapter 5 + 6 and how it relates to my experience at TTU
Chapter 5
American Higher Education
The movement and development for community colleges. 183-184
I attended Chattanooga State my first few years of my undergraduate courses and transferred them to TTU. It was more cost effective and I didn't have to move away from home.
The Morrill Act 174-176. Originally I was a Civil Engineering major. This major is what made me realize that I enjoyed Mathematics. This eventually lead me to seek teaching mathematics in secondary education.
The German Research Model 177-179. This event helped shaped the way that graduate school is handled. If it wasn't for this I might not be seeking my MA in education.
#
Higher education in the twentieth century 189. The rising costs of education has put me in debt. I am thankful that TTU is a much cheaper alternative than most universities but I have noticed that even TTU has had tuition costs rise a tremendous amount since I first enrolled back in 2008.

Graduated from TTU in 2016

G.I. Bill 180-183 The development of this bill and several others like it have paved the way for may of my friends to seek a higher education. This Includes both Chattanooga state and TTU.
Women's Higher Education 171-172. Women are part of my college experience because of this movement. I can only imagine how different our society would be with out this.
Graduated from Soddy Daisy High School in 2004

Chapter 6
American Teacher Education
Samuel Read Hall and his Book on Teacher Education 207
This book set much of a standard for teacher education today.
Developing the Education Profession 219. The efforts of Andrew Draper set in motion of the educational standards for teachers as a professional career.
Teacher Education Program in colleges and universities. 221. This trend to turn teacher ed and school administration programs put teacher ed as a four year college degree program. This phased out Normal schools and turned them into four year universities. Thanks to these past programs I get to enjoy working towards my teaching certification in Graduate studies.
Educational Technology 225-226. This focus on technology in the class room has changed the way teacher teach in the modern era. Calculators, smart boards, tablets, and PC labs use to be things of the past. With out this change many classes, especially Mathematics, would not be taught and understood to the degree they are today. This movement will effect my future teaching and learning methods. An example is the Idea tree I am currently making.
#
Inclusive Class rooms 226-227. The education for all handicapped children's act made sure that public schools are equipped to handle children with disabilities. This act requires that their needs are met so that they can be as successful as possible. Children with disabilities are the key reason I took American Sign language as an undergraduate course. I hope that some day, the information learned in that class will help me teach a child in need.
#
Progressive Education and Teacher Preparation with child centered education. This program directly affects our current educational system at TTU. Many classes we take involve managing classrooms so that children are given as many advantages that we can provide. A child that is not experiencing social justice is a child who will not succeed.
#
Academies supporting teacher education 208. New York State focused much of their teacher education programs with in academies. This expansion on much of Hall's ideas laid more ground work for Teacher Ed programs.
Preparing Women as Teachers 209 - 211 These efforts made by Catharine Beecher, opened up many opportunities for women educators.
