DIFFUSION
the movement of particles from and area of high concentration to a low concentration until an equilibrium is achieved
-
In Plants
-
the stomata are controlled by guard cells - close when too much water is being lost; without these plants would wilt
water vapour evaporates from cells inside the leaf - escapes by diffusion as there is more on inside than air outside - quickest in hot, dry, windy conditions

OSMOSIS
the movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to low water concentration
if a cell is short of water the inside solution will be concentrated - the outside solution is more dilute so water moves into the cell
if a cell has lots of water the inside solution will be more dilute - the water will be drawn out of cell into the fluid outside
