Underserved Maori Students
Racism
Can be very negative to students learning if they don't feel confidant within the classroom environment
Stereotypes, such as lazy,not clever enough and cant learn as well as non-Maori- can be determinanal to students learning
Present in many school that goes unnoticed, and slip through the cracks for both teachers and students
There is hard evidence that Maori students are underachieving in many aspects of school life, sometimes dure to racism

Positive student-teacher engagement in and out of the classroom
Classroom content engagement, with topics and all elements of the curriculum
Educators, iwi and whanau- working together, to ensure greater understanding for Maori students

Maori key competencies are key to ensure Maori culture and concepts are bought into the classroom not hung outside
Ako and Whakawhanaungatanga, important Maori key competencies put in place in the classroom and school environment

Not always used for the whole school, dependant on the teacher

Programme started in 2001, to increase the amount of Maori culture and pedagogies in the classroom
Provides professional development for teachers to bring into the classroom
Present in many schools, both secondary and primary
Important part of curriculum and enhancing teachers cultural awarness
So far has been very successful in integrating Maori culture and practices into the classroom
Equity and equality
Each child being treated fairly (same resources and teacher help)?
Can have a negative effect on children who are doing academically well
Try and ensure all students receive the same treatment in the classroom
Changes can happen over time, but will happen in due course
