Designing a Bias-Free Organization
Iris Bohnet -
What Works
- Simple changes can reduce biased behaviors that undermine organizations
Organizations that initiate diversity programs need to evaluate if they work
Take a randomly selected group and see if anything changed
Design organizations to make things right
Blind orchestra auditions (behind curtain)
Everyone falls bias (male kindergarten teacher)
Good behavioral design
Recruitment
Try software that strips age, gender, educational background etc to focus on talent (Applied, Gap Jumpers)
Interviews - stop going with gut!
Structured interviews - same question to every candidate
Examine job ads for 'gendered' words i.e. nurturing or assertive
Promotion
Rely on hard data - not instinct (whether you like someone)
Don't let managers read self evaluations
Dif in gender/cross cultural self confidence
Men more likely to give high praise of self
women more modest
Practices might favor one gender or the other
SAT - risk in guessing
For beliefs to change, people's experiences must change first
Continued awareness building
