Bringing opportunities to play soccer to inner city youth
Stream 1 - Why don't youth in inner cities play soccer?
Lack of opportunities
Most urban areas have little room for athletic fields
Land is too expensive
Builders use the land for development
More opportunity for additional revenue in rental property or selling of property
In cities such as Los Angeles, in poorer areas, there there is approximately 1.3 acres or park space for every 1000 people
Many schools are eliminating physical education programs
Schools are relying on after school programs
Schools are engaging in standardized tests instead
Over 40% of administrators have cut time dedicated to physical education
The time cut from physical education has been dedicated to extra math and reading
Student interest has waned
Often girls will sit in the corner and boys will barely participate
This lack of participation does not help youth to reach the suggested minimum 60 minutes per day of physical activity
Basketball and football have popularity
Both are cheaper to participate in
Schools and/or local community usually subsidize the costs for athletes to play
