Biometric Security By: Ryan Forrest
Pros
More than 50% of people use the same password for
EVERYTHING
. This means that if someone was to obtain your password it would be really easy to steal everything you have
With Biometric Security, it is really easy to use something different for everything. You won't have to remember it as it will always be on you.
It is very time efficient and is very hard if impossible to forge.
Biometrics in the Future
In the near future, we might see biometrics most useful with a wingman of some sorts as it might not be secure in the near future
Many people say that they are afraid of biometrics because they think that it is creepy
Stage of Development
Not too long ago biometrics were still being imagined in movies as somewhat of science fiction but still something that would be achievable in the future. Now of course we have biometric technology over the world
it started to be widespread with fingerprint ID in smartphones. Now biometrics are also used in other devices that we use daily such as gaming consoles and some high end cars
Many security agencies even on the national level are using biometrics identify criminals with facial recognition in street cameras.
What is Biometric Security
Biometric security is a security mechanism used to authenticate and provide access to a facility or system based on the automatic and instant verification of an individual's physical characteristics.
It is a tertiary product.
Government and Economic Impacts
Currently one of the biggest uses of biometrics are for the government. Specifically surveillance.
It will help many businesses save money. If there is ever anything that is stolen from a business, the cameras will be able to pick up the face of the person that stole it and the store could maybe make an effort to track them down. It is also estimated that 60% of all inventory lose is due to employees stealing from the business.
Cons
There has been evidence that shows that a criminal can steal your fingerprints just from examining a photo with you in it, so long as you have your fingers up. There are people currently working on a transparent sealant that can be applies over every photo to prevent this from happening.
Certain parts of your body such as your face are constantly changing throughout your life. This means that some biometric security will have to be frequently updated to have an accurate reading.
If somebody steals something like your fingerprint you can't just get another finger to replace your old fingerprint. Of course you could ust change your authentication to soething differemt life your ear however that might not be as well supportsed
