Prerecorded Sound Effect Libraries
Advantages
low cost
own the whole library and have unlimited copyright-cleared use
Internet provides many sources to obtain copyright-cleared sound effects
effects are available in mono, stereo, and surround, depending on the library
sounds are digital quality
Disadvantages
Dynamics and Timing
creating own effects allow editors to have control over dynamics and timing, especially effects generated by humans
Ambience
if the ambience in the same scene are different, the audience will perceive the two actions as taking place in different locations
some sound effect libraries provide different ambiences for the same effect
Fixed Length of Sound Effects
if the effect is continuous, it can be looped
if it is not continuous, you have to find 2 separate effects with the same sounding
Choosing Sounds from the Titles
titles are often not precise enough to be used as guides for selecting material
most good libraries provide short descriptions of each effect to give an idea of its content
Sound Quality
some websites provide low quality sound effects
Manipulating Recorded Sound Effects
Altering Playing Speed
altering the speed can change the character of each effect (it may not work with all sounds)
Eg: a slow, low-pitched mournful wind can be changed to the ferocious howl of a hurricane by increasing the playing speed
Playing Sound Backward
DAWs have a reverse command which rewrites the selected region in reverse
provides moments of sonic punctuation and emphasis for on-screen action
commonly used in action films and film trailers
Looping
used when continuous effect needs to last several seconds
must make sure that effect sounds continuous rather than repetitious
a reverse-loop can sound more natural if done correctly
loops can also be designed to create a sound effect
Using Signal Processing
can create an infinite number of effects
helps enhance a sound effect without actually changing its identity
Sampling Frequency
when using CD-based effects with other sound media that are accompanying the picture, must make sure that sampling frequencies are compatible
