ISTE Standards for Students
Digital Citizen
: students will be safe and ethical when using technology and will be aware of the permanence of their actions in the workings of the digital world.
Empowered Learner
: students will set learning goals and choose the appropriate technologies to activate and engage their knowledge and learning capabilities.
Knowledge Constructor:
students will evaluate the reliability, credibility, and relevance of data found in digital media sources and build knowledge through making meaningful connections and conclusions.
Global Collaborator
: students will use collaborative technologies to identify and explore local and global issues while engaging with others to provide themselves with multiple perspectives.
Creative Communicator
: students will employ a strategically chosen set of digital objects and technologies to create original works.
Students need to be aware of the uses and processes of many different technologies and digital objects so that they can have a big enough toolkit to allow them the ability to make an enriched creative work.

Empowered learning
: students do their most effective learning when they have some choice and are self-directed.
Community collaboration
: community members such as experts, mentors, and elders provide leadership and support in diverse and multiple learning environments
Technology allows for students to gain access to other learning networks available in their community and beyond. It is important to recognize that there are important values, perspectives, and knowledge bases that students can discover and engage with that is most effectively provided by collaborative efforts with a diverse group of the world's people. Teachers should model collaborative techniques that allow for the most effective and respectful group engagement and mutual problem solving.

: students will see beyond just their own self-interests to see the needs of the community and will exercise their empathy and compassion in engaging with others.
It is important that while students engage collaboratively with others through technology, that they do so while exercising empathy and compassion for the perspectives and approaches of those they work with. By offering respect, group processes and activities will be approached with the necessary openness to allow for new insights and will also allow for mutual understandings to be reached more effectively and efficiently.

: technology can be used to enhance professional learning opportunities and experiences.
It is important that teachers attempt to use technology in the classroom and curriculum when possible so that students can be taught effective ways to engage in the ever-increasing digital world. Teachers should take every professional opportunity to learn more about existing and emerging technologies and technological methods.

: innovative approaches to technology can provide more efficient ways to analyze data and communicate information beyond the school community.
It is important that teachers have a strong working knowledge and fluency of technology so that they can educate their students in the most efficient and ethical ways to use it. By modeling their fluency, they will be able to more effectively and easily pass on their technological knowledge and technique to their students. Teacher's confidence in technology use will communicate an ease and comfort that more readily shows the benefits advantages of technology for learning purposes.

: Students will learn about the potential impacts of technologies in their lives and workplaces and will be able to determine which tools to use in certain situations.
Students should not only be taught how to critically analyze data found in digital media, they should be able to critically analyze the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies and in which situations each one would be beneficial for data analysis and retrieval.

: The ICT curriculum is not intended to stand alone, but should be infused within core courses and programs.
Infusion of technology standards within the curriculum is important for teaching students how they can apply and communicate the content they learn in the digital world that is a dominant method of data exchange. The infusion of technology standards in a controlled educational environment allows for professional and ethical processes and approaches to technology use be taught to the students alongside as well.

: students will apply their ability to use a variety of technological processes to critically research, communicate, and solve problems.
Students need to use technology with a critical eye so that they can most effectively analyze data based on a learned understanding of what is reliable, credible, and relevant. Students ability to use a variety of technologies will aid in their ability to thoroughly critically analyze data since they will be able to engage in multiple approaches.

: students will understand the ethical and basic approaches and uses of technology.
Teachers understand the importance of modeling safe and ethical uses of technologies along with their basic use and application. An important point that students need to be educated on is the permanence of their actions in the digital world and how responsible approaches will prevent technology's misuse. Students should be taught the importance of engaging with their empathetic and compassionate selves when interacting with others in the digital world.

Student-centered learning is the central concept behind technology use in the classroom. Teachers understand this so they should attempt to provide opportunities for the students be empowered learners where the students set their own educational goals and the teachers facilitate the use of technologies to meet these goals.
