Realism
Content
It is a genre made to show life as it is in reality, hence the name.
It favours normality over the extremes of society, choosing everyday life of ordinary people instead of supernatural people.
There is less showy heroism, changes are more gradual like in our lives. Awkward events are focused upon, rather than glossed over as in traditional genres.
Effects
It brings us face to face with the problems of other peoples' lives at the moment, and it comforts us to know that we might not be the only ones with our own particular struggles.
It encourages us to empathise with the people in the story, and perhaps its purpose is to show the social reality of that time.
History
It first appeared in the 19th century, from authors such as Jane Austen, George Elliot and Leo Tolstoy.
Then, the plot of the novel tended to be a stable, yet flawed world and then an unexpected event happens and the world is tipped upside down.
Style
To focus on those darker aspects, it must be more colloquial, direct and believable. It can be viewed as gritty and too frank rather then a polished a glossed over view of life.
There must be a way for the narrator to get the reader to trust them and accept that the information given in the book is how things really are. It contains a lot of localised information, from slang to street names for people.
Theme
It focuses on the more dark aspects of life: poverty, violence, discrimination , corruption, racism and disease.
Eg: Middlemarch - We are made aware or paramount problems then, such as the Reform Bill o 1832. Elliot also shows the settled community even with many prospects of social, technological and political change.
What is Realism?
Dictionary definition: Realistic fiction is a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people or animals in a believable setting. These stories resemble real life, and fictional characters within these stories react similarly to real people. It is also the most popular genre in adult fiction.
It is a genre that takes a real-life situation and puts it into writing. It does not exclude any of the more dark and does not idealise the situation.
