Etiology:
Environmental factors
Sun exposure
Drugs such as procainamide( Pronestyl) or hadralazine (Apresoline) an antiseizures drugs
The etiology is unknown, but a genetic predisposition is suspected. Multiple susceptibility genes from HLA complex, including HLA-DR3, show association with SLE
Hormones also play a role. Onset and exacerbation of the symptoms occurs after the onset of menarche, oral contraceptive use, and during or after pregnancy

Antibodies (anti-DNA, anti-Smith, ANA)
CBC, LE cell prep
Serum complement levels
Urinalysis
X-ray of affected joint
Chest X-ray
ECG

Incidence
