High-stakes: a test with important consequences for taker, such as a diploma, scholarship, or a liscense to pratice a profession. Source
Purpose: To make important decisions about students, educators, schools or districts, mostly for the purpose of accountability -- funding, policy, grade of effectiveness.

Disadvantages: Not certain that it tests for quality of a students education and has no tie to noncognative skills and abilities.
They are assessments of learning, attempting to be measuring sticks upon which to compare students, schools, districts, etc.

Authentic Assessment: an assessment where students perform real world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of knowledge and skills.
Advantages: gives students more choice and allows students to be co-creators of their learning. The results of assessment also exemplify non-cognitive skills as well as content knowledge.
Disadvantages: This is often time consuming and labor intensive to set up an assessment, review and give feedback.
Purpose: they tap into intrinsic motivation of students and shows how students do with applying their knowledge in meaningful ways instead of just conveying that knowledge is retained.
ex. Creating a museum exhibit, human centered design challenge, business proposal to panel of local business owners, building a working robot to compete in a competition
This is an assessment for and of learning. Usually deals with presentation or exhibition of work which displays what has been learned as well as application of that learning. This is followed by feedback that acts as deep learning opportunity.

Self-Assessment: A assessment where a student reflects and evaluates their own learning and experience.
Purpose: Self-assessments aim to allow students space to reflect upon their learning and experience and consider their performance in relation to their learning objectives.
Advantages: Students are less tempted to cheat or feel pressure in the way other assessments are administered returning more authentic feedback.

Disadvantages: can be labor intensive for teacher, can be a process of pretending or inflating grades, students may not feel equipped to assess themselves
This is an assessment for learning. Self-awareness is a continual learning process that requires students to step back and really think about the purpose of their learning and contextualize it with their own goals and motivations.
ex. self-reflection sheet, journaling, self-created rubric, goals sheet

Summative: assessment that focuses on outcome of a program, summarizing content retained by student.
Purpose: After a set of content is delivered, summative tests look at if that knowledge has been take attained by students.

This is an assessment of learning. Summative assessments are given after the "learning" has been done to grade the student on what they were able to retain after content has been delivered.
Example: Final exam, Unit Test, Spelling Test, Vocabulary Test
