Conflict in the Northwest Territory
Native Americans' went to war
Had an alliance with British. Miami Chief Little Turtle was in command under General Josiah Harmar.
Went to war against General Wayne's army, British no long supported Native Americans
signed the treaty of Greenville( gave US claim to most Indian lands in the Northwest territory
fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers; Native Americans were then defeated
Remaining Neutral
The Bastille in Paris was attacked by French people that rebelled against their king.
It was the first acts of the French Revolution-a rebellion of French people against their king in 1789. They overthrew their king and made a republican government.
They were inspired by the American Revolution, and Americans supported the French Revolution.
Other Americans were worried about their violent riots and attacks and they were shocked when King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were beheaded.
The French Question
America was asked to help France fight England by using privateers.
Privateers were private ships hired by a country to attacks its enemies.
Washington told Edmond Genet that using American privateers violated U.S. neutrality.

Edmond Genet was a French Ambassador who wanted Washington to send privateers to help France.
Jay's Treaty
It settled the disputes that had arisen between the United States and Great Britain in the early 1790's.
Washington sent Chief Justice John Jay (part of the Supreme Court) to London to work out a compromise to prevent another war.
The British didn't want to have war with America and payed damages on seized American ships.

The Neutrality Proclamation
Stated that the United States wold not take sides with any European countries that were at war.
George Washington believed that this was safe, but was criticized by some of the members of Congress.
James Madison believed Washington had gone beyond his authority and questioned his right to issue the proclamation without the Congress' permission.
Pinckney's Treaty
Washington asked Pickney to discuss the problem of trade around New Orleans with Spanish Officials
Manuel de Godoy delayed the agreement causing Pickney to become desperate and for the agreement to favor the Spanish
It worked and they both signed Pickney's Treaty; which settled trade disputes with Spain

The Whiskey Rebellion
Tax was made on American made whiskey
People were then bitter about tax, so they protested and sold whiskey as money.
Often times people went to court about the issue
In 1794 in Pennsylvania fighting broke out; to what is known as the Whiskey Rebellion
People refused to pay taxes
Washington led people against those rebelling scaring off rebels

did not run for third term; instead wanted retirement
