Respiration
Animals that live on land
Invertebrate structure
skin
book lungs
tracheal tubes
Vertebrate structures
Most adult amphibians use lungs to breath
Example: Amphibians
Their lungs are small and do not have a lot of pockets. They use their skin as a respiratory system
Example: Mammals
They have large lungs that have many pockets. Because of these pockets their lungs are very efficient
Specialised respiratory structures
Example: birds
Birds need a lot of energy to fly so their cells have to receive a lot of oxygen. They have a system of air filled sacs which help them obtain more oxygen. The usually have nine sacs.
Animals that live in water
Most of these use their outer body coverings or gills as respiratory system
Examples:
Cnidarians use their outer body coverings for gas exchange
Fish, mollusks and arthropods use gills
Dolphins, whales, alligators use their lungs. They go to the surface of the ocean to breathe in air and then they hold their breath when they are diving
