Respiratory systems: The structures that an animals uses to exchange gases with its surroundings make up the respiratory system
Land animals:
Adult amphibian lungs are small and do not have many pockets. Therefore the main respiratory structure for an adult amphibian is its skin.

Fish:
Most of these animals use either their outer body coverings or their gills as respiratory structures.

Examples: Cnidarians use their outer body coverings for gas exchange and fishes, mollusks, and arthropods use their gills
Insects:

In more complex animals the layers have folds or pockets that increase the surface area for gas exchange
Examples: Grasshoppers have tracheal tubes, which have opening for gases to enter and leave the body, spiders have structures called book lungs, which are made up of thin, stacked cell layers
