WHY: They first created the sewing machine for thread to be used on leather and canvas. Later the machine is now used for creating fabric, for sewing materials together and making clothing.
WHEN: September 10th, 1846
WHAT / HOW IT WORKS: Beneath the needle a hook rotates, capturing the thread from above and looping it around another thread, this one reeling from the bobbin below. The two threads interlock around the layers of fabric, binding them to one another.
