Tobacco Biopharming
Areas of Concern
-
Problem: Cross contamination The plants can mutate other plants on other fields meant for a different use. An example is when a biopharming corn field mutated a soy bean farm meant for human consumption.
Solution: Biopharming is now done in green houses. Making the chance of cross contamination near 0%.
Problem: Usage A large area of concern is that this technology can be used for evil in the form of biological warfare as you could use the plants to produce toxins that can kill humans, animals or plants. Further more you could use the pollen or bacteria to kill or mutate other crops ruining future generations of plant, food supplies and farm land.
Problem: Space Large fields take up a lot of space while they have to be isolated for fear of cross pollination .
Solution: Vertical farming can be done inside of greenhouses to save space while not negatively effecting the production.

Five W's
Why: Firstly, tobacco isn't used for human consumption therefor there are less regulations in place. Secondly, it grows quickly and in large quantities. Thirdly, the market for bio medicine is growing. Fourthly, it is cheaper than using animals.

Where: The University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada
What: Biopharming is when you genetically modify plants or animals for pharmaceutical use. Tobacco biopharming is genetically modifying tobacco in a way to produce pharmaceuticals. The pharmaceuticals generally come in the form of plant made proteins or PMP's.
