Canals
They used canals to get water into the city.
There was many canals in Tenochtitlan.
Canals allowed people to easily travel around the big city in boats.
Aztecs built many canals throughout the city.
Canals were connected to fresh water springs.
Causeways
A causeway is a road across a waterway.
There was three major causeways from Tenochtitlan to the mainland.
Tenochtitlan was connected to the mainland by causeways.
There was bridges underneath the causeway to allow small boats through.
The bridges could be removed when the city was under attack.
Tenochtitlon
It had a zoo with multiple animals.Some of the animals were jaguars, rattle snakes, and multiple exotic birds.
In 1500 Tenochtitlan was one of the biggest cities in the world.
It was connected to the mainland by causeways.
The markets in Tenochtitlan with many things to sell.
Tenochtitlan was the Aztec capitol.
Aztec Culture
Food
Their most valued food was cocoa beans, which was used to make chocolate.
Maize was their main food. They always ate it.
The Aztecs ate maize, tortillas, beans, squash, insects, fish, honey, dogs, and snakes.
Some people used cocoa beans as currency.
During festivals people threw food on the ground offering the god, Tlaltecuhtli some food.
Art
Poetry was the highest form of art in Aztec culture.
The Aztecs made a variety of jewelry.Some of the things they used to make jewelry were gold,copper,jade, silver, and obsidian.
Many Aztecs used metaphors throughout their art.
The Aztec took a lot of pride in pottery.Other nations traded for the prized Aztec pottery.
Art was an important part of Aztec life.
Family Life
Children attended school or helped out around the house.
When children got punished they inhaled smoke from the kitchen fire.If kids were really bad they added chiles to the fire.They would also puncture them with thorns.
Women worked at home cooking for the family and weaving clothes for the family.
When someone got married they got a piece of land and they would have their own home.
Men worked outside of the house as a farmer, warrior, or a craftsman.

Hernan Cortes killed Montezuma after he invaded the Aztecs.
Montezuma was the emperor of the Aztec.
He welcomed Hernan Cortes, because he thought he was a god.He thought he was a god because he had horses and guns, which they had never seen before.
Cortes
Hernan Cortes was a Spanish conquistador.
Hernan Cortes was from Spain.
Conquered
Montezuma let Cortes in which made it easier for him to conquer the Aztec.
Cortes defeated them easily because he also had more advanced weapons.
A lot of Aztecs were sick and weak from the smallpox.
One main thing that killed off the Aztec was smallpox.
Inca Culture
Clothing
Men also wore tunics.
Women wore long dresses.
Men wore long sleeveless shirts.
Both men and women wore capes or ponchos to keep them warm during the winter.
The clothing of the rich was similar but it was more decorated.
Food
The main foods were corn, squash, and beans.
Other foods were tomatoes, peppers, fish, and ducks.
Almost everyone in the Inca empire had food to eat.
If you were sick or too old to work the government would take care of you and feed you well.
What you ate depended on where you lived.
Games
You could only get the ball into the hoop with your hips.
The winner got the losers clothes and money,sometimes even their wives and children.
The loser of the game would be killed as a human sacrifice.
The Incans played a lot of ball games.
One of the games they played was Tlachtli, it was a combination of soccer and basketball.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu was a vacation retreat for the emperor.
Machu Picchu was built in 1450.
Machu Picchu was built by Pachacuti, the ninth ruler of the Inca.
About 1000 people lived in Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu was divided into two sections, the Sacred District, Popular District, and the District of Priests and Nobility.

Francisco Pizarro was from Extremadura.
Francisco Pizarro was a conquistador.
Atahualpa
Francisco Pizarro kidnapped Atahualpa.
Francisco Pizarro killed Atahualpa after he kidnapped him.
Atahualpa was the Incan emperor.
Conquered
Pizarro invited Atahualpa to a meeting, And he came. He only brought 160 soldiers.
They attacked the soldiers and kidnapped Atahualpa.
Pizarro offered to free Atahualpa if he filled a room with gold and one with silver.
Later on in 1533 Pizarro killed Atahualpa.

Terraces
Some of the crops they planted were maize and potatoes.
The terraces were shaped like stairs so it helped prevent erosion.
The terraces kept heat in the soil, so in the cold nights the roots stayed warm.
The Incas got a lot of food from the terraces.
The terraces prevented erosion, so they could plant crops in the same place multiple times.
Walls
Walls were covered in sheets of gold.
The stones in the walls were fit so closely together you couldn't put a paper through it.
The walls weighed about two hundred pounds.
Some walls were sculpted with small animals or geometric shapes.
All walls were made out of stone.
