Stereotype Threat at Work
Premise

Diversity can damage morale, turnover, communication, conflict
Training focuses on manager's bias and decision-making not the work environment as a whole
unbiased metrics can still miss employee potential

correlates with physiological changes and long term health problems
Strategies to Reduce Threat

teach behavioral strategies for dealing with threat
reduce the relevance of stereotype to task
provide alternate explanation for task difficulty
change context; remove people from token situations, or present positive role model who contradicts stereotype
Implications for Management
changing attitudes is long term endeavor
objective should be to reduce impact of stereotype
acknowledge and address stereotypes explicitly
shift focus from manager to envrionment
