Europeans first believed that there was only three continents. The continents they believed were there were Africa, Asia, and Europe.

However, a new class was created because of the recent increase in trade.

The people found in this class influenced society because of the money and power they had. This can still be seen today through the power structure of society.

Society was limited to three classes at this time: the clergy, the nobility, and the peasants.

Scholars looked back at Roman and Greek traditions and used their cultural norms .

A philosophy named Humanism was then spread. Humanism was centered on the belief that the human mind could make great changes and improvements.

The attitude of the Renaissance swept across Europe .

Citizens were upset about the taxes that were set in place by the Bishops to support the Pope and his ideas.

Popes and Cardinals were found to be more of rulers than spiritual leaders at this time.

The inseparable relationship between religion and politics at this time caused corruption because noble families paid for their interests to be met.

They disagreed on many things and each declared that they were the sole pope.

In 1417 both popes were kicked out and a new pope came into play. However, by this time most people did not care about the pope's power.

During the times 1378-1417 two popes claimed leadership of the church.

Martin Luther came into the forefront in saying that he was against indulgences.

During the time of the Reformation indulgences were a regular way for the church to raise money.

Churches used indulgences to take money from people. The people in the church claimed that you were free from your sins when you paid them.
