  - - - Designed safe physical environment at home for kids to explore on their own.
      - Provided interesting things to manipulate (pots, pans, toys,etc.)
      - Spent no more than 10% of their time deliberately interacting with their children, yet are always "on call".
      - Made themselves available to share in their children's exciting discoveries, answer questions, help child in an activity for a few minutes here and there while they continue their daily routine.
      - Enjoyed their children and were patient, energetic, tolerant of messes, accidents, and natural curiosity.
      - Set limits on behavior and were firm and consistent in discipline.
      - Disciplined according to age (see text pg. 154!!!)
    - - Spent little time with children, were overwhelmed by their daily struggles and their homes were disorganized.
      - Spent great deal of time with kids, overprotective and pushed children to learn.
      - Provided for kids materially, but restricted kid's instincts to explore by ruling certain places and possessions out of bounds.
      - Most used playpens and gates extensively.
- - - - Question: What's most important? Parent-child relationship, or more familial relationships due to more siblings? How do parents find time for each child? :!?:
  - - - Parenting between the oldest and the youngest differs.
        
        Personal application: my parents parented me very differently from how they parent my siblings now.
      - With each new child comes a new temperament and behavior of the other children.
- - - - In other words: children influence their own development by influencing the adults that raise them
  - - - Autocratic family: Father has authority over mother and children.
      - Democracy: familial relationships are based off of consensus and compromise.
      - Religion: Overcome human natures to please God.
        
        Personal application: all we do is to please God. However, we do so because we also know that by pleasing God, we too find happiness and joy in our families.
      - National: purpose to serve country, so parents are expected to agree with the country's leaders on what to teach their children.
      - Ethnic: Serve the purpose of the family based on ethnicity.
        
        Ex: Island culture. Must have approval from family to marry someone.
      - Progressive: Freedom to set their own goals in life. No principal destiny to serve their family, country, or God.
        
        Most common in U.S. and Europe today. Focus on competition and achievement. "Be Who You Want to Be"
    - - Low Income Parents: Emphasize obedience, respect, neatness, cleanliness, and staying out of trouble. They are more controlling and arbitrary in discipline. More short directives and varying tones of voice to communicate with children.
        
        Exceptions? Consider the influence of religion on low-income families. : :red_flag:
      - High Income Parents: emphasize more happiness, creativity, ambition, independence, curiosity, and self-control. They are more democratic, use reason, and are receptive to child's opinions. Use complex language.
        
        Exceptions? Consider autocratic or aristocratic families. Parental expectations for children to be as successful and upstanding in society as they are.:red_flag:
      - Occupation: The role of the job shows through in the role of the parent.
        
        Ex: Lawyer uses more reason and logic to parent their children.
