Britain's motivations for Imperialism
Political
Global Presence
Setting up a colony in India would help the british to wage war more strategically and easily
It could help in the case that they would want to wage war with one of these countries they would be able to start the war from a much closer vantage point.
It would also help in the case that the British wanted to wage war with other European countries, as they could attack from two battlefronts, both from Britain and India
Setting up a colony in India would also help the British to defend, or set up a counterattack more effectively.
It would be useful when defending from other countries as they could reposition the large amount of troops in India to Europe to help Britain defeat the attackers.
It would also be useful if an attacking country was depleting much of its manpower for the attack, as the troops in India could set up a counter attack to conquer the country when it is weak.

This could grant them access to many different countries and trade with them
Such as China. By setting up a colony in India, they could more easily trade with nearby asian and middle eastern countries
The British could send the tradable materials first to India, and then to China for safer transport, or they could trade with the materials that are already available in India.
