        In the article by Taylor M. Chapman, called Women in American InMedia: A Culture of Misperception, she says, “Mass media is especially harmful to women because it constructs negative perceptions of woman and reinforces them on a daily basis.”

  - - - Women were seen as lesser than.
      - Women were almost seen as children
    - - Woman were not allowed to work outside the home.
        
        According to the New York Times article, called Why Gender Equality Stalled, between 1994 and 2004, American’s preference for the male breadwinner/female homemaker family model rose to 40%. from 34%. The article also stated that in 1997, a quarter of stay-at-home mothers said full time work would be ideal.
        
        So, even in the late 1900’s and early 2000’s people still thought that women were meant to be homemakers and men were supposed to work outside the home.
      - According to History of the Women’s Right’s Movement, National Women's History Project, “Husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity.”
        
        Women were meant to stay at home and take care of the house. They cooked, cleaned, and looked after the children.
        
        Only men were allowed to own property.
        
        They were forced to be completely codependent on their husbands.
