The Nature - Nurture Debate.
Key information surrounding the Nature - Nurture debate.
Nurture specific.
A person's phenotype is the interaction between a persons genetics an the environment in which they were reared in.
Empiricism is the philosophical idea that behaviour results from learning and experience.
Nature specific.
A person's Genes clearly influence their observable characteristics, such as height, eye colour, and hair colour.
Nativism is the philosophical idea that certain human characteristics including knowledge are innate.
The Nature - Nurture Debate: Key Points
Both Nature and Nurture are essential for any behavior, as it can't be said that a particular behavior is the product of the genotype of the phenotye.
It cant be said thst a particular behaviour is the resut of percentage of either the nature or nurrture influence as they interact in a complex mannor. as well as this in some cases the behaviors origins can be different from case to case.
one conclusion which psychologists can agree on is that the difference between two people's behaviour is mostly due to heredity or mostly due to environmental factors.
Psychologists don't adopt an extreme position either hereditary or the environment as an explanation of behaviour, because hereditary is expressed within the environment.
The argument:
Nature (Nativism)
Concerned with how genes influence behaviour.
Evaluation
Useful applications such as drug therapry (strength)
Neglects the role of the environment in behaviour (limitation)
Genes are passed to offspring from the parents.
Nurture (Empiricism)
Concerned with the role of the environment and experience in shaping all of a persons personality and behaviours
Evaluation.
useful application such as behaviour therapy (strength)
Neglects the impact of biological factors on behaviour (limitation)
Methods of investigation.
Twin studies
Adoption Studies
Implications of the debate
If genes are found to be largely influential in terms of intelligence, then this raises the question of whether it is worth spending time and resources in developing educational enrichment programs for children.
If nurture or the environment is implicated in schizophrenia, this could lay the burden of blame on the family.
