- - - - identities are created through ACTION in role identities - this action fulfils the individual > provides self-esteem. not acting in these roles may cause distress
      - SALIENCE - identity roles are hierarchical. the higher the salience of the role identities, the greater the likeliness of it acting out in diverse situations / identity salience also influences people's relationships with others, particularly their perceptions and evaluation of others.
      - COMMITMENT - the higher the commitment, the greater to salience & vice versa / the more that people are dependent on these identity roles, the higher the commitment, because should the individual vacate this role, the psychological impact = loss of social network, and self-esteem that follows
        
        1) interactional commitment = reflects the number of roles associated with a particular identity
        
        2) affective commitment = the importance of the relationships associated with the identity
      - identify the self created and also identity of others in complementary or counter roles created (RECIPROCAL nature)
      - "symbolic interactionism" - Mead (1934) & Cooley (1902). self = a product of interaction. people come to know themselves through interacting with others, through their roles in relation to others

      - Leads to group prototypes which seek to minimise the differences inside the group, and maximise the differences with groups outside
