what is the gospel?
Gospel message
Jesus died for our sins on the cross
Jesus was buried
Jesus resurrected
Jesus appeared to over 500 people
It is about a person
Foundational info
This is used to understand the Gospel
For example, what is sin?
For example, Jesus is both fully divine and fully human
These 2 points arent necessarily part of the Gospel but they help to understand it better.
what does a person need to know in order to be saved?
why is this important?
teaching the wrong gospel has terrible consequences (galatians 1:6-9)
an incorrect gospel will give a false salvation hope
a correct understanding of the gospel is a crucial foundation for our walk with the lord (colossians 6)
eternal security
Actions we think could make us lose our savation
claiming to not believe in God
Certain terrible sins
denying that Jesus is God or that he died for our sins
what scripture says
if you believe in Jesus' work then you have eternal salvation
you are sealed by the holy spirit in Christ
we are secure because we are kept by Jesus
neither past nor present
neither angels nor powers
sin is not mentioned in Paul's list because jesus already took care of it.
unbiblical ways to evaluate eternal security
"i dont feel saved"
our emotions are not a condition to be saved
am i doing good enough
our works are also not a condition to being saved
Salvation diamond
1st facet justification
means to be declared righteous
not made righteous but pronounced it by God
illustration:
God the judge
The judge considers the offer and punishes Jesus while giving us righteous standing which Jesus had
Jesus the defense attorney
the defense attorney steps in but he doesnt attempt to defend us
he offers to take the punishment for us
the right standing he has with the church he asks to be given to us
defendant is us
we leave the court justified (declared righteous)
we arent innocent
we arent made righteous
we are pronounced righteous
prosecuting attorney is Gods law
reads our sins we have done
justification is open to all who believe
2nd facet adoption
definition: the act of God where he places believers into his family
benefits of being adopted by God
we can call him Abba meaning father
we have unhindered access to God
never let sin prevent you from talking to God
we can always ask him for help
as his children we are in a community with many other siblings
as his children God disciplines/trains us :we arent abandoned
the concept of discipline is closely related to the concept of training
God disciplines his legitimate children
God disciplines us for our own good
our parent do their best and we respect that
God disciplines us for what is good
when discipline is recieved we glow in holiness
Gods children are to endure hardships as Gods discipline
3rd facet redemption
Definition: to purchase sinners out of the slave market of sin
slavery in the ancient world was common
a person could become a slave by being born a slave, a captive in war, and self sale into slavery
classic OT illustration: Israel crossing the red sea after moses leads them out of egypt
the scripture speaks of people bein slaves of sin and the devil
even as believers we can live in captivity to sin
scripture portrays people who sin as slaves to sin
believers are said to be free from the captivity of sin
thus our redemption means that sin while present in us is not our master: we have a choice whether to walk in the flesh or the spirit
one day our bodies will be redeemed : freed from the presence of sin
4th facet sanctification
definition" a process where we work with God to live according to the spirit and to have our behavior become more like christ
sanctification comes from a greek word meaning "to be holy or set apart"
the idea is to be set apart from sin and set apart from God
sanctification is viewed from different phases:
past: we are viewed as sanctified
present: we are viewed as in the process of being sanctified
future: we hope for a future complete santification
2 aspects of sanctification
both are found in Jesus "high priestly prayer"
jesus is "in" the father and the father is "in" jesus
Jesus prays that we might have the same relationship; christ 'IN' us and we "in" christ
our identification with Jesus: we are in the "in" christ club
!st aspect of sanctification: identification with Jesus
all who have believed the Gospel are identified with Christ
this is like being in the "in christ" club
2 characteristics of those identified with Christ
we are no longer under condemnation
we are blessed with spiritual blessings
we are holy and blameless before God
we are all given all things that pertain to life and godliness
we are a citizen of Heaven
we are dearly loved
we are freed from the authority of sin
what is true of jesus is true of us
what does this practically mean for Christians
we should see ourselves from God's perspective as identified with jesus: this is our true identity before God
we do not work for this identity
we shouldnt try to earn our own identity
we should view other believers from God's perspective as identified with Jesus
2nd aspect of sanctification: Jeus' life in the believers via the Holy spirit
its important to remember the image of the tree and the roots: sin produces sins in believers and unbelievers
Paul describes the struggle he experiences when he desires to do good but finda that sin is right with him
Paul recognizes that he has both old and new nature (the flesh and a desire to please God)
Paul also recognizes that he needs the Holy spirit to produce the character of Jesus through him
to walk according to the Holy spirit means for a christian to daily live his or her life in dependence upon the Holy Spirit to produce the character of Christ in him or her
illustration: we have 2 natures, fruit of the spirit and the walk of the flesh in us and we need to choose the fruit of the spirit to show up and be more noticeable
