Eternal Security
What does scripture say?
You are sealed by the Holy Spirit “in Christ”
We are secure because we are kept by Jesus
If you believe in Jesus’ work, then you have eternal life
Unbiblical ways to evaluate our eternal security
Our good works: “I’m not doing enough good works to be really be saved”
Problem passages: Hebrews 10:26-27
Our emotions: “I don’t feel saved”
How do we think we could lose our salvation?
Claiming to not believe in God
Denying that Jesus is God or that he died for your sins (apostasy)
Certain terrible sins
How are you saved?
Must demonstrate faith
Faith is a simple, human response
Faith involves human will
Demands an object
Illustrations:
Sitting in a chair
Asking someone to move a desk for you
Def: to believe, to trust, to rely on
Faith is not...
a work (illus; bank withdrawal slip)
an emotion
something supernatural given to us by God
Confusing Terminology
“Accepted Jesus as my savior.”
“Prayed the prayer.”
“Give it all to Jesus.”
“Lay your burdens at the foot of the cross.”
“Let Jesus into your heart.”
Salvation Diamond
Adoption
Def: the act of God placing believers into his family
Benefits of Adoption
We are in a community with many other siblings
God disciplines/trains us; we are not abandoned
God disciplines/trains his legitimate children
God’s discipline/training is for our good
"Discipline" is closely related to "training"
God’s children grow in holiness when disciplined
Hardships are God’s discipline/training
We have unhindered access to God
We are considered his children and call him “Father” (“Abba”)
Justification
Def: to be declared righteous
Illustration: The courtroom
Characters
God's law is prosecuting attorney
Humans are the defendant
God is the judge
Jesus is the defense attorney
Action
Prosecuting attorney reads out our sins
Defense attorney agrees we are guilty but asks that he be punished and we get his right standing
Judge agrees to terms
We leave justified
We are not innocent
We are declared righteous
We are not made righteous
Justification is...
a free gift from God
by grace (no strings attached)
by faith not by Law
available to all who believe
Results of justification
We have bold access to God’s grace
This should create humility before God and others
Jesus has taken our condemnation, we are legally righteous before God
Sanctification
Phases of Sanctification
Present - We are in the process of being sanctified
Future - We hope to be completely sanctified
Past - We are viewed as sanctified
Aspects of Sanctification
Our identification with Jesus
Characteristics
We are given all things that pertain to life and godliness
We are a citizen of Heaven
We are holy and blameless before God
We are dearly loved
We are freed from the authority of sin
We are blessed with all spiritual blessings
We are no longer under condemnation
What is true of Jesus is true of us
All those who have believed the Gospel are identified with Christ - "The in Christ Club"
What does this mean?
We should see ourselves from God's perspective
We should see others from God's perspective
Jesus’ dwelling in us through the Holy Spirit
"Walking in the spirit" means to daily live in dependence upon the Holy Spirit to produce the character of Christ
Paul
Recognizes that he has both the old nature (flesh) and new nature (spirit)
Recognize he needs the Holy Spirit to produce the character of Jesus
Struggles with his desire to do good but finding sin is in his way
image of the tree and roots: Sin produces sins in everyone
Def: A process where we work with God to become more Christ-like
Redemption
One day our bodies will be redeemed/freed from sin
Def: To purchase sinners out of the slave market of sin
Even as believers we can live in captivity to sin/slaves to sin
Scripture portrays people who sin as slaves to sin
We have the choice to continue to sin
Believers are free from the authority of sin
The Scripture speaks of people being slaves of sin/the Devil
What is the Gospel?
The Gospel message
Jesus arose from the dead 3 days later
He appeared to over 500 eyewitnesses
Jesus was buried
The Gospel message is about a person
Jesus Christ died for our sins
Foundational knowledge
For example: Definition of sin
For example: Jesus is divine and human
Def: Information that's not technically the Gospel but it is needed to make sense of it
Why is it important?
An incorrect Gospel will give people a false hope of salvation
Knowing the Gospel is the foundation for our walk with the Lord
Teaching the wrong Gospel has terrible consequences
