Osteogenesis Imperfecta
A genetic disease that causes bones to break easily with little or no cause
Caused by genetic defects that stop the body from making strong bones
The body does not have enough type I collagen or has poor quality type I collagen
Collagen is the main protein in the body's connective tissue. Without enough it makes bones weak
In most cases neither parent has the disease but both have some sort of mutation in their genes
Doesn't matter sex of the baby, male and female have the same chance of contracting the disease
There is no cure for OI yet
Patients with OI are recommended to exercise as often as possible and maintain a healthy diet
A surgical procedure is also common where metal rods a placed on long bones to prevent breaking
Medications the promote gene strengthening are also used along with growth hormones
Many famous people live with OI
These people include gold medal winning Paralympic athletes such as McKenzie Coan, an American swimmer
People living with OI can do just about everything that "normal" people do.
People with OI can work in practically every job that exist
People that live with OI are recommended to do things without heavy lifting, but are encouraged to do things that they love
There are many symptoms that come along with OI
Most common symptoms are bone fracture, short stature, spinal curvature, and hearing loss
There are 4 main types of OI
Type I is the most common and least life threatening
Type II is the most severe type and is usually lethal to infants
Type III is severe but not deadly and usually parents of patients don't have any form of OI
Type IV is moderate and usually traced through family lines
