Role Of Women
Success: In this book and time period, success foe women is defined as marrying young to someone who has a nice estate and can provide for you, and living a life style to help your kids for the future. An example of this is how Mrs. Bennett feel extremely successful and fulfilled when she is successful in marrying her daughters to nice men.
Education: Education is not very important for woman, they must be able to act properly as a woman. Austen says that they go to finishing school basically to have learn how to act like a lady with proper etiquette.
Marriage: Marriage for a woman is high on the priority list. It is a single and most important goal for all woman to marry young, and to a nice man with as much money as a possible. It is a bonus if the man is admired and respected by the community and comes from a well known family. Marriage is extremely important to a woman.
Social Expectations
Social Class- Social class is very important in pride and prejudice. When evaluating a person to decide on weather or not you like them you immediately take into account where they are on the social latter. Lady Catherine despised Elizabeth due to her low connections.
Impact on Marriages- Many people decide who to marry based off of social expectations. Lady Catherine expected Darcy not marry Elizabeth because of her low connections. Darcy knew that if he married Elizabeth he would have to overlook her poor connections. The social expectations of marrying puts a lot of stress on marriages.
Marriage
Specific Relationships/ marriages- Relationships were not dragged out at all. Collins did not even really have a relationship with Charlotte before he decided to marry her .Marriages could raise someones social standing of lower it. Elizabeth marrying Darcy raised her social status.
Proposals- were very proper and thought out and prearranged. When someone proposed it was a big deal but not very dotted on as it was something that was expected to happen if the people were spending a significant amount of time together.
Characters
Jane- Important character, sweet, caring, accepting, nice, marries Bingley,
Elizabeth- headstrong individual, stubborn, most adventurous of Bennett, Marries Darcy
Mary- quiet, keeps to herself, accomplished with academics, not social especially with men
Mr. Bennet- extremely sarcastic, father of five Bennet girls
Mrs. Bennet- obsessed with her daughters marriage, gossip, dumb
Mr.Darcy-wealthy, mysterious, reserved, complex, actually caring towards others overall well being especially his sisters
Mr. Collins- awkward, rude, insensitive , worships Lady Catherine
Charlotte- nice girl, friend to Lizzy, just wants stability, not very wise, old when marries
