energy in Earth's Atmosphere- pg. 542-545
energy from the sun
radiation is direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
energy comes from sun; travels as electromagnetic waves
visible light
all colors in rainbow
different colors are from different wave length
blue have shortest wave lengths, red and orange have longest
non- visible radiation
one form of energy
infrared radiation has wavelengths that are longer than red light which is not visible, but can be felt as heat
sun gives ultraviolet radiation, invisible form of energy with wave length shorter than violet light, this radiation causes sunburns, skin cancer and eye damage
energy in the atmosphere
some sunlight is absorbed buy atmosphere
water vapor and carbon dioxide absorbs some infrared radiation
clouds act like mirrors, reflecting sunlight back into space
dust particles and gases reflect light in all directions- called scattering
gas molecules scatter shor wavelengths of visible light more than long ones
light passes through greater thickness of atomosphere when sun is higher in sky
energy at Earth's surface
some of sun's energy reaches earth's surface and is reflected back into atmosphere- about half sun's energy is absorbed by land and water and changed into heat
when surface is heated it radiated most energy back into atmosphere as infrared radiation
infrared radiation cant travel all the way back to atmosphere and back to space
gases from a blanket atround earth holds heat in atmosphere
gases hold heat in air called greenhouse
greenhouse natural process that keeps atmosphere that is comfortable for living things
