Plate Tectonics
Plate Boundaries
convergent
A tectonic boundary is where two plates are moving towards each other. The denser of the two plates is subducted into the mantle and later forms volcanos, but if both plates are of equal density, mountains will form.
Divergent
A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving away from each other and new crust is forming between the two plates.
Transform
a tectonic boundary where two plates are moving against each other, for example, one north and one south scraping against each other.
mantle
the plasticy part of the earth between the crust and the core that makes up 80% of the earths surface.
convection cell
a convective zone where the hotter of the substances rises and the cooler sinks, creating a rotating current
uplift
the uplift of rock adjacent the the ground, rising up in a jagged form.
-
volcano
the result of a convergent boundary, a mountain or hill with a creator at the top that spews out lava.

-
Continental Crust
-
Continental crust is the older, thicker but less dense crust.
Oceanic Crust
-
Oceanic crust is the younger, more dense, and thinner crust.
-
ridge push
A force that causes a plate to move away from the ocean ridge, and into a subduction zone. It works together with Slab Pull.
