Ethical considerations in research into genetic influence on behaviour (8/22)
INTRODUCTION
the BLA states that all cognitions, emotions and behaviours have a physiological basis
genetic research aims to determine the influence of genes on behaviour
this type of research pose risks to the individuals studied ; discovery of genetic predispotion to a disorder has consequences
therefore ethical considerations are crucial in carrying out this research:
informed consent for genetic research
confidentiality
stigmatisation of the pp's one basis of knowledge of genetic conditions
CONCLUSION
ethics should always be considered to avoid harm to pp + protect individuals
many consequences that could occur if not carried out properly
considering ethical implications are particularly important for genetic research
informed consent for genetic research
demonstrated by
Money (1965)
Bruce's penis was burnt off in a circumcision accident
uninformed consent could lead to serious problems
Money advised the parents give him a sex change with the aim of investigation the genetic influence on behaviour
consent provided
Ethically:
pp must be fully informed of the true aim + nature of the experiment
Money publicised this study, exploiting Bruce + family + violated confidentiality
no one was debriefed + no counselling was offered
stigmatisation of pp's
assessed pp's tendency to depression via self-reports
Ethically:
Capsi et al. (2003)
eg. employer / insurance companies might treat you differently
stigmatisation of pp's who have genetic predisposition to major depression
awareness of individual's genetic predisposition to a disease can cause stigmatisation
self-fulfilling prophecy if they find out - expressing the symptoms
pp's might fear the onset of depression
