one evolutionary explanation on behaviour (8/22)
INTRODUCTION
the BLA states that all cognitions, emotions and behaviours have a physiological basis
evolution = cumulative changes in genetic traits to a species over a period of time
evolutionary psychology aims to explain all behaviour by evolutionary means
this essay will explore the evolutionary explanation of the study of emotions ; in particular disgust
theory of evolution was proposed by charles darwin
CONCLUSION
natural selection results in adaptation
principle of evolution is based on how our genes mutate + change
natural selection
those that are advantageous are passed down through the process of natural selection
Darwin's theory of evolution is based on 2 key assumptions
Fessler (2006) + Curtis et al. (2004) suggest 'disgust' aids the survival of the human species
therefore ann evolutionary behaviour
Fessler (2006)
being picky with food cold help prevent harm to unborn offspring
natural selection may have helped human ancestors to be picky with food to compensate for their increased susceptibility to disease
(in first trimester the pregnant woman's immune system is very low)
women in first trimester scored higher in disgust sensitivity than women in their 2nd/3rd trimester
supports disgust as an evolutionary behaviour
Method:
healthy pregnant women asked to rank potentially disgusting scenarios
Aim:
investigate whether disgust helps compensate for the suppressed immune system
increases rate of survival + protects offspring against disease
Curtis et al. (2004)
strongest disgust reaction for images which threatened the immune system
disgust also decreased with age + men showed less than women
Results:
Conclusion:
pp's ranked their level of disgust for 20 images
suggest disgust is evolutionary
Method:
tested whether there were patterns in disgust response via online survey
natural selection may have helped ancestors react with disgust when something threatened their immune system - avoid disease
allows better chance of survival + creating offspring
decrease with age = less likely to reproduce
women more than men = carriers for offspring so need to protect their offspring's survival
