Ethical considerations related to research studies at the BLA (8/22)
INTRODUCTION
research conducted must be ethically valid
a study needs to satisfy the ethical standards set by the relevant psychological organisation ; either BPS or APA, depending on your location
ensures all pp's (both humans + animals) are not harmed
in psychology, ethics must be considered
the BLA states that all cognitions, emotions and behaviours have a physiological basis
eg. the APA, includes; protection of pp's, right to withdraw, consent, confidentiality, deception + debriefing
CONCLUSION
withdrawal
confidentiality
protection of pp's
deception
ethical considerations in all psychology research includes:
debriefing
slight exceptions for consent + deception depending on aim + nature of study
animal research also allows more harm to come to pp + suggests euthanasia if permanent injury follows
BERTHOLD 1849
this knowledge could benefit health of humans / animals
what is the price we're willing to pay to enhance our knowledge?
research provided significant benefit to the understanding of the effects of the hormone testosterone
with animal research, it's the judgement of how much discomfort the animal is in
Aim:
test effects of testosterone by castrating roosters
whether this can be justified with potential academic gains
may have caused distress to roosters after testes were surgically removed
welfare of the roosters wasn't monitored
roosters were permanently damaged - he didn't euthanise them
MONEY 1965
Method:
David Reimer lost his penis in a circumcision accident
Money suggested to his parents that David had a sex change
Aim:
prove that nurture determines gender identity not nature
didn't reveal his true motive
sex change case study
David displayed masculine behaviour when he grew up
caused problems with his peers at school
proved psychosexual development is determined by chromosomes + hormones
unethical study
deception + uninformed consent
no protection from physical / mental harm
no right to withdraw
no confidentiality when money wrote up his reports
SCHACTER + SINGER (1962)
told they were investigating effect of suproxin on vision
however deception was used to avoid pp bias
thus, deceived about injection they received
in fact looking at two factor theory using adrenaline
pp's deceived about aim + true nature of study
the research has potential significant contribution to our understanding of the causes of emotions
pp protection was not provided - harmful affects from adrenaline injection?
