The Princess and The Goblin
Irene (Princess)
Face fair and pretty, eyes like two bits of night sky, each with a star dissolved in the blue. (P.g 2)
Very afraid, but her curiosity was stronger than her fear (P.g 11)
"Golden hair, which her mother had given her" ( P.g 76)
Wants to experience greater things, but doesn't know much about the world
Goblins
Queen
Six toes, wears cement shoes
Sleep during the day and work at night
Their feet are the weakest part of their body. No toes
Irene (Grandmother)
"A very old lady who sat spinning." (11)
"Skin was smooth and white" (11)
Hair: combed back, hung loose far down and all over her back, white as snow (11)
"...eyes looked so wise..." (11)
A constant source of support for Irene, who is the only one who can see her
Her actual existence is questionable
"Although she was old she didn't stoop a bit" (13)
"She was dressed in black velvet with thick white heavy-looking lace about it; and on the black dress her hair shown like silver." (13)
" The old lady smiled a sweet smile" ( P.g 85)
Curdie
Miner Boy
He was a very nice looking boy, with eyes as dark as the mines in which he worked and as sparkling as the crystals in their rocks (36)
Has a friendly relationship with Irene, whom he wants to protect from the goblins
Seems to be one of the only characters who knows how to deal with the goblins
King
Taller than most men
"He wore a narrow circle of gold set with jewels around his helmet" (74)
"He had gentle, blue eyes , but a nose that made him look like an eagle" (75)
Deeply cares for Irene and enjoys spending time with her
Lootie
Irene's nurse
Simple minded, lacks the capacity to understand or believe Irene, when she tells her about Grandmother
"She (Lootie) would rub her eyes, and go away and say she felt queer, and forget half of it and more, and then say it was all a dream." pg.84)
Extremely emotional when it comes to Irene's care/safety/well being. Irene is quick to snap and her throughout the story and Lootie immediately backs down for the fear of being dismissed.
"(Irene) instead of holding up her little mouth to be kissed, turn away from her (Lootie) and lay still. The Nursie's heart gave away altogether and she began to cry." (pg 23)
