STORAGE ch.6
PHYSICAL STORAGE pg.120
DISK DRIVEMAGNETIC
aka hard disk
- contain glass platters which are coated with layers of various materials
- Disk that spins like a record full of '0's and '1's
- Not Shock resistant (don't move/shake when spinning)
:warning: disk speeds to know: 5400, 7200, 10000, 15000 RPM :warning:
- LARGER IN CAPACITY/ LESS EXPENSIVE
SOLID STATE
- non-volatile flash memory
- being written electronically
- eMMC (embedded multi-media card) = cell phones
- NO MOVING PARTS
-
HARD DRIVE FORMATTING
see pg. 129
:warning: Windows uses NTFS, Macintosh uses HFS+, and Linux uses ext4 :warning:
HARD DRIVE ISSUESBAD SECTOR ERRORS
- can cause blue screen of death
- you can run CHKDSK. to scan the HD for bad sectors
READ/WRITE ERRORS
- one of the easiest things to occor.
S.M.A.R.T. ERRORS
- compare to an oil change
- keeps track of what the HD is doing and tells you how you can prevent fails in the HD
- on the hard drive itself
SLOW PERFORMANCE
- this happens when the machine is running slow
- run CHKDSK. (this will try and find it and fix it)
CAUSES OF HARD DRIVE CLICKING
- could be on an un-level surface
- could have a loose connection
- not receiving enough power
- replace the hard drive is issues on pg.127 occor
CONNECTIONS
- IDE and SATA
- Straight and Angled SATA
RAID pg. 133
Redundant array of independent disks (RAID)
- Combines multiple HDs into a single logical unit.
- Hardware RAIDs are the most common
- please refer to figures on pg.134-135
RAID 1
aka mirroring*
- takes the data and copies it into a twin drive
- must have 2 hard drives for this RAID
RAID 5
aka striping w/parity
- spreads the data across 5 drives and includes a parity data
- if one of the drives fails the parity data can recreate it from the remaining drives.
- requires a minimum of 3 drives
RAID 0
aka disk stiping
- evenly splits the data into two drives
- does not include fault tolerance (if one drive fails that data is lost)
- offen reffered to as a "gamers RAID"
RAID 10
aka nested RAID or RAID 1+0
- requires 4 drives, 2 hard drives for the disk mirroring, 2 more to stripe the mirrored disks.

OPTICAL DRIVE pg.139
BLU-RAY
- has the most storage because it is layered
- see chart on pg. 143
